Spring: The Season Of Termites

March 27, 2018

Termites tend to swarm during mid to late March and in some years, even in early April. It is easy to put termites out of your mind as a homeowner, especially when the weather is still somewhat cool outside. However, you should be aware that subterranean termites are active year-round and can cause damage to your home at any time.

Swarms are not the only thing you may notice about these annoying bugs in the spring. You may also notice mud tubes. Mud tubes are tunnels made out of the soil that subterranean termites use to travel wood sources around homes. Mud tubes and swarms of termites are the most common signs that these creepy crawlers may be on their way to invading your home.

Swarming termites begin to emerge after the last freeze of winter and when the temperatures rise to the low to mid-70s. Swarms of termites are the most likely to be spotted during weather like this; they are also more likely to be spotted in the early afternoon or after a light rain.

It has been a long winter and we have been waiting for the warm, spring weather all year long; however, the nice weather can bring devastating bug infestations. If you notice mud tubes or swarms around your home, it may be a great idea to investigate your home and be sure to see if there are wood-eating bugs in your wood. The earlier you can catch these insects, the less expensive the repairs will be. If you do find termites in your home, contact the experts at AMCO Pest today and get rid of the problem as fast as you can.
