Termites: Colony Sizes And What You Should Know

Termites: Colony Sizes And What You Should Know

Termites can be pesky insects – but how much do you know about them besides that? We took some time to study termites and see how they work! Did you know that different species have different colony sizes? There are many different colonies to watch out for, we have listed three.

The smallest colony of termites to watch out for is Drywood Termite colony. Drywood colonies, like their name suggests, love to make their colony homes in wood. These sneaky creatures can lodge themselves in any wooden structure. Their colony sizes can grow as large as 4,800 termites.

The next colony to keep your eye out for is the Subterranean Termite colony. Subterranean colonies build their colonies deep in the soil below ground. These massive, underground colonies can house between 60,000 to 1 million insects and can be very destructive to the soil and ground around your home; or worse, the ground that your home sits on.

The largest colony to be cautious of is the Formosan Termite colony. These termites are the largest colonies and can be extremely damaging just due to their large colony sizes. These colonies work fast and can mangle their way through a foot of 2×4 wood in less than a month! The average Formosan colony contains 350,000 to 2 million worker bugs. If that isn’t scary enough, did you know that the largest Formosan colony ever found in the U.S. contained 70 million insects and weight an astonishing 600 pounds!

If you suspect that a colony may be around your home, call AMCO Exterminators! We are expert exterminators and can rid your home of these pests in a jiffy!
