The Most Effective Flea & Tick Control For New Jersey Property Owners

When it comes to pests, some are considered to be nuisances—no more harmful than being unwelcomed guests inside our homes—but others are harmful, whether it be for damaging property or causing health issues. Two pests that fall into the health issues category, that you could encounter here in New Jersey, are fleas and ticks. Although quite different from each other, fleas and ticks do have some similarities; they both feed on the blood of mammals; they both spread diseases; and they both get onto our properties in common ways. It is important to know the preventative measures that you can take to keep fleas and ticks away from your New Jersey property.

Identifying Fleas & Ticks

Fleas are small wingless insects that are yellowish to dark brown in color. Although they do not have wings, fleas have powerful legs which allow them to jump far distances relative to the size of their body. As such, they can jump onto animals (including pets) or people who happen to be walking by.

Ticks, on the other hand, are arachnids. This means they are related to spiders. They have eight legs and are usually red, brown, or black in color. Unlike fleas, ticks are not capable of jumping. Instead, the way they attach to a host is by hanging out on tall grass and waiting for a host brush up against them

Health Issues Caused By Fleas & Ticks

Both fleas and ticks are parasites. This means they are organisms that live on other organisms of another species and derive their nutrients at the host organism’s expense. As such, fleas and ticks are known to spread a variety of bloodborne diseases as they feed on a variety of hosts. These diseases include: anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, hepatozoonosis, Lyme disease, cytauxzoonosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. As for pets, fleas and ticks can cause anemia and tapeworms. Overall, there are numerous reasons you don’t want fleas and ticks coming around your yard. So it is important to take the proper steps to limit your exposure to these dangerous pests.

Flea & Tick Prevention Techniques While Home And Away

The most common way for fleas or ticks to get onto your property is by traveling in on wildlife. Making your property less enticing to wildlife goes a long way in preventing fleas and ticks from gaining access to your yard. Some prevention tips include:

Pick up any fallen fruit or vegetables from trees or plants right away.

Do not leave food or trash from food outside in your yard.

Pick up any uneaten pet food.

Place fencing around gardens, especially if there are fruits or vegetables.

Keep your lawn well-manicured.

Trim back vegetation from around the property.

Talk to your vet about flea and tick prevention options for your pets.

Partner with Amco Pest Solutions for on-going professional assistance.

Additionally, if you venture out into the wilderness, some methods to help you keep from picking up fleas and ticks include:

Stick to the centers of hiking trails.

Refrain from venturing into tall grass or brush.

Wear long sleeves and pants while out in the wilderness.

Check both your body and your pets’ bodies for fleas or ticks after returning from spending time outdoors.
