The Secret To Keeping Wasps Away From Your New Jersey Yard

The Secret To Keeping Wasps Away From Your New Jersey Yard

Having a wasp infestation around your New Jersey home can prove to be more than frustrating, especially if you’ve been anticipating some delightful outdoor activities once spring and summer finally arrive. While these angry insects are incredibly beneficial to the environment, pollinating and keeping harmful garden pests to a minimum, they’re still dangerous to have around. Those with allergies know this all too well, but wasps can sting multiple times, and a swarm of them would send anyone to the emergency room.

Common Wasps Found In New Jersey

Commonly found stinging insects around the New Jersey area include wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets. They all fall within the category of wasps, despite their differing labels, and most all of them look relatively the same either way. Black and yellow stripes, and varying in length between ¼ of an inch to up to two inches long. Some have brown accents, some yellows are a bit paler than others, but all retain the same menacing, terrifying aggressive buzzing.

There are some wasps that prefer building hanging nests out of various wood-sourced debris. These are the most widely known species, as they’re more often shown in media such as television shows and movies. There are others that prefer nesting in the ground though, and these can be even more dangerous, as you have no idea you’re stepping on a nest until it’s too late.

Why Do Wasps Prefer My New Jersey Yard?

There are a number of reasons wasps could decide to camp out in your backyard or shack up in your attic:

The abundance of food; wasps are attracted to sugars, meats, and insects

Flowering plants; much like bees, wasps are professional pollinators and enjoy a lovely nectar meal

Available habitation; empty rodents nests, undisturbed shady areas, overgrown shrubs, holes in roof and siding

Oftentimes, wasps will investigate due to unsecured trash bins and outdoor food prep areas such as grills and smokers. These insects love a lot of the same kinds of foods as humans, and an easy meal is always the best meal. Keeping lids secured on trash bins and thoroughly cleaning outdoor food prep areas are important steps in preventing wasp infestations.

If you enjoy creating and maintaining a beautiful garden within your New Jersey property, you might consider doing some research on plants first. If you’re a fan of adding trees to your landscape, it’d be a good idea to steer clear of fruit trees. Wasps love all kinds of fruit and adding flowering, fruiting trees would definitely attract them. As for standard garden plants, many plants that produce flowers will attract stinging insects such as wasps and hornets.

Other plants that will still accentuate the beauty of your property while still repelling wasps include:

Geraniums

Wormwood

Eucalyptus

Marigold

Citronella

Regular yard and home siding maintenance will also reduce your chances of wasps shacking up within your property line. Filling in holes in the ground, trimming bushes and trees, and repairing any holes and cracks within the foundation, siding, and roof trim will remove a lot of popular sheltering areas for them. Adding a few fake nests to your property would help as well, as wasps are incredibly territorial and won’t dare to nest within several hundred feet of another colony.
